Photography: is there a way to work out focal length?

You might be able to estimate the field of view if you can estimate the sizes and distances of objects in the picture. Then you would need to know the negative size to convert that to a focal length estimate. With the possible exception of fish-eyes, I think you would find virtually every imaginable fixed focal length lens in 1943.
