What are the backwoods/wilderness camping laws in washington state?

is anyone familiar with the legality of backwoods camping in washington state? national parks vs state parks? public/federal lands? say i wanted to just head out, sleep wherever i stop, not at established camp sites but in the thick of it...what/where/how is the best way to go about it? any advice would be appreciated...
