What is a good manual transmission first car?

I am going to buy a first car soon and wanted to get a manual. I would be buying used around the 8000-9000 price range. I really like the 2006 Scion tC ($8000-8500) but i have heard a lot of problems with the manual on them. Does anyone know any other cars around this price range that have a good manual transmission?
