Legalities of grabbing a car thats been abandoned?

there is a ute abandoned for about a week next to a hill, it has been stolen though looking at rego and stuff it was stolen long after it was abandoned. i found the rego papers but cant get contact with the owner because i wanted to buy it off him. if i grabbed it would it be impossible to register again?
